Here you can inquire about the possible materials for the containers, the addition and care of the floor, and the various options for designing hanging flower arrangements for the lush and rich appearance of your veranda or terrace.

Who is not in love with the hanging traffic lights full of wavy flowers and green leaves? These types of gardening containers are a charming addition to your porch, courtyard, gazebo or patio – and easy to implement, provided you are familiar with the good tricks of the matter. Below we give some tips on how to plant your hanging baskets and how to keep them in bloom and flourish all season long.

Different types of tanks with varying irrigation plans

The basics. To create your hanging baskets, you can use plastic flower pots to hang up or wire baskets with a coconut fiber lining, as well as rattan baskets and even glazed ceramic vessels with specially attached hooks. Indeed, such an idea as that of the “right material” to be used does not exist at all – it is mainly about the question of aesthetics and the view you are aiming for. However, please note that depending on the different types of tanks, you should expect varying irrigation plans, since the soil in each of them would take an uneven amount of time to dry out.

Almost all smaller plant species that usually grow in the ground can also be grown in traffic lights

However, those who look the most beautiful are those that do not have a stiff, upright growth pattern, but rather a slightly descending, sagging or arched habit. It is best to choose plants such as ivy, ivy, ferns, succulents, vines and annuals such as petunias, spring herbs, geraniums, calibrachoa, lobelia and fuchsias.

The group of varieties that you should avoid also includes all plants with unusual sizes, since the hanging baskets in principle rarely exceed the requirements of 30 to 60 cm in diameter. Avoid plant species with very specific or tricky maintenance requirements such as B. orchids, tillandsias and bromeliads, which could complicate the work to maintain the plants.

It is advisable to refrain from plants with extensive root systems, shrubs and trees – even if they are dwarf

Drainage. The conditions and techniques for drainage will vary greatly depending on the type of material your hanging baskets are made of. The wire containers with coconut fiber lining will dry out almost by themselves; the hanging ceramic pots, on the other hand, can keep too much moisture; while the plastic vessels offer a happy drainage medium.

If you’ve used coconut fiber lining, remember to put a plastic saucer on the bottom of the traffic light first and then add soil and plants – this will keep some of the water below the layer of earth where it will be reachable by the roots before it gets to it dries up.

However, if you use ceramic pots, you must cover the bottom of the container with a layer of pebble before bringing in any soil and plants, continue to water the plants sparingly to protect them from rotting, and choose plants that prefer a bit more moisture, so that you finally know you’ve done something to counteract the lack of drainage holes.

I am not a big supporter of plastic pots, especially with regard to hanging planters and flower containers, where things are such that both the bottom of the respective plastic container and the plastic hanging devices are freely on display. However, there are a few tricks that I use to hide them in cases where they prove to be the best choice. I use long creepers like ivy, petunias, calibrachoa and sweet potato vine, which overgrow the pot and completely cover it. I will replace the original plastic hangers with decorative chains. Only a few minor improvements can transform the boring plastic container into something far more attractive.

irrigation. The soil in the hanging baskets usually dries out much faster than the one in the garden, so you’ll need to be ready to water your plants daily, unless they’re extremely dry-loving (once in the morning and again in the evening) so they are adequately hydrated.

If you have accidentally skipped a day or two and suddenly find the soil completely dry and your plants withered, remove the traffic lights and try to water the inside of the vessel very slowly by repeating the procedure several times to rehydrate the soil enough. You may need to cut out the withered leaves or flowers to help the plants regain their strength if they are excessively dry.

You can also introduce drip irrigation and attach a small hose system to each hanging basket – however, this option will be most effective if you have multiple hanging lights to sprinkle at the same time. You would have to connect the pipeline to your tap – forked hose systems will drain the necessary amount of water and distribute it efficiently between the traffic lights. You will see black hoses on the column sides of your veranda or terrace, but if you really are bothered by such a sight, this is probably not the optimal variant for you.

Regardless of the container in which they grow, your plants, and especially the nutrient-hungry annual species, will need regular fertilization

Fertilization. You need to know that with potted plants, the nutrients are drained from the soil much faster, which imposes the task of taking care of the appropriate and timely addition of fertilizers so that your plants can stay healthy and prosper. Be careful, however, and be careful not to overdo fertilizing, as in such cases it will become harmful to the plants and can prevent them from blooming. It is advisable to use water-soluble general-purpose fertilizers or formulas that have been specially developed for the needs of your specific plant breeding. In order to keep my annual plant species, which usually need a higher soil content of nutrients, fertile, I would like to add slow-release fertilizer to the soil immediately after planting; I give them extra support that they can use throughout the growing season.

Fertilization can take place either monthly or, if the solution is diluted to a semi-strong concentration, also weekly. This explanation mainly concerns the blooming annuals, which need a lot of nutrients. For ferns, succulents, or cacti, you need to follow the directions on the packaging, but in most cases, the monthly fertilization would be enough.

Some experts advise that high-quality potting soil should be used to lay out the traffic lights, while others suggest that the soil be grown outdoors

Notes on planting. Make sure to always combine plants that have the same requirements in terms of sunlight and water for the best possible growth. You would never plant the always thirsty balsam along with a drought-tolerant cactus, would you? Although these two species really represent the extremes, it is undoubtedly true that each plant has its particular preferences for light and water, so be prepared to plan your traffic lights accordingly.

However, it is much more important to choose the soil formula that is most suitable for the types of plants you have pre-grown – for example, if you are about to plant cacti or succulents, it would be advisable to use the most suitable quick-drying soil mix to use. However, never take soil directly from your garden beds, as this type of soil will never dry out properly in a container.

To get a casual, cottage-style look, you can try mixing a variety of flowers and green leaves in the same traffic light, but if you opted for a more elegant and modern aesthetic composition, you might think of just one type of plant and – color per container. A number of similar, harmonizing flowers or plants will look much more coherent than the melange, but it is also true that the charm of the traffic lights, which are so full to the brim with the most varied, lush hanging plants and flower tendrils that they literally overflow, is simply undeniable.

Layout. There are a few different ways that you can pretend a designer intervention when putting together your own hanging baskets. One of the options is to choose a single plant species (e.g. purple petunias or asparagus), which you can plant in large quantities in each of the baskets. The consistent color and the homogeneous planting concept will create a powerful effect even from a distance and appear more stylish or contemporary than many mixed schemes and variants.

However, if you prefer the splendor of flowers, we will share here the simple rule of thumb which leading designers follow.

Choose an upright plant with a bright color that has already formed some flowers (e.g. a red geranium), then add several hanging plants (such as lobelia) to decrease the rugged hardness of the traffic light edge and give your arrangement the finishing touch with creepers and cascading leaves (such as ivy or sweet potato vine). The different heights, growth patterns and colors will form an imposing herbal weave that inspires and captivates the viewer.

The secret formula for grouping the plants in your hanging basket

Advice on hanging up and especially finding the best positions.

Where to put the hanging basket? The edge of your porch is a perfect place, as are fence posts, terrace edges and courtyard roofs. Avoid placing your hanging baskets in places where someone can walk against them, especially in the middle of the ceiling or at entrances to your apartment or other buildings or extensions. Do not forget to always attach the traffic lights to beams or pillars that can withstand their weight, especially since flower pots full of water are often quite heavy. In order for the overall appearance to be both uniform and tidy and to reveal the architectural merits of your apartment in a charming way, it would be more appropriate to distribute the hanging baskets evenly along the opening of your porch or porch than to hang them here and there at random.

The hanging itself. Hooks and clips for hanging hanging baskets are readily available in all hardware stores or DIY stores – read the instructions and note the weight restrictions that must be observed for each size of hook or clip. When shopping, you have to be sure that you have correctly estimated the weight of your hanging baskets and that you choose your items based on these reviews. Most medium-sized traffic lights will certainly not weigh more than 4.5 kg, but in all cases it is considered safer to use technical aids and devices that can carry a little more than the actual weight of your hanging pots. For those plant containers that have a horizontal overhead structure, such as. For example, hanging from the top edge of the porch, hooks are the appropriate solution, while brackets are much better for the containers that you intend to attach to vertical structures such as fences and walls.

• Before assembling the screws of your hooks or clamps, first use a pre-drilled hole each time using a drill with an insert that is slightly smaller than the screw itself. This prevents the appearance of cracks and splits in the surrounding wood and guarantees the tight fit of the screws, which is very important for safety.

• Then press the threaded end of the screw into the test hole by turning clockwise until the screw is tightened and the hook is flush with the ceiling.

The procedure for installing brackets is basically the same, except that you have to tighten the screws a little with a drill or screwdriver at the designated points for reinforcement.
